I bought a new whirlpool dishwasher model #gu1500xtlq1 5 years ago. After only 3 years the washer was making a terrible grinding noise I was told it was the motor. we chose not to replace the motor at the time and just live with the noise. The motor has now went out, the water will come in and drain out but it won't spray and wash the dishes. I am going to fix it myself and I am trying to figure out if I need just the motor or the motor and pump.

Just finished replacing the motor on my own gu1100 tall tub dishwasher. It too made a super loud squealing noise for years. Eventually if stopped spraying the dishes, it would fill and empty but not wash. I purchased and entire sump and motor, but all I really needed was the motor. I had lots of black grit that fall out from the motor after it was removed. Somewhere I think there are instructions to replace the motor, without pulling the dishwasher out, but I could not do it without pulling the dishwasher out and tipping it to the side, so I could see what I was doing underneath.

I have the same model and a repairman came out and said I needed the pump & motor. Mine is 5 yr old and makes awful noise but still works good with that exception. I am thinking of replacing the entire motor & pump but am wondering if it can be done through the door and leave the unit installed. What did you do?

Replacing the entire pump & motor is usually easier and in my opinion best. Although it cost a little more. You can install the new parts without removing the dishwahser it is just hard to see exatly what you are doing underneath the unit. If you have patients go for it, if they are's so good.....remove a few more screws and slide the unit out. (Don't forget to disconnect the water supply!!
