Ser SJ4920040 is a side by side counter depth refrigerator with an icemaker. The icemaker now only makes crushed ice and no longer makes cubed ice . What part/switch would be malfuctioning and how would I repair?

The first place to start is to remove the bin, check the shifter arm mounting and, that the shift arm end is in the proper position in the bale opening of the shifter solenoid(box on back wall behind the bin).

Select cubed ice on the dispenser and activate the switch, listen fior a pop or snap noise from the shifter solenoid.

No pop / snap sound would indicate an inoperative solenoid,

this could be due to a bad solenoid,loose connection, or selector switch in the dispenser assembly on the door.

I can see no way to remove the bin. There are no screws

Ikost,

We're talking about the ice cube bin/container.
In most cases you pull it out towards you and slide it off the shelf, and set it aside. Some units have a tab or catch on the bottom of the bin, that you have the push on the latch , or lift up on the bin assembly to release.

Once you've got the bin out, you can hold the light switch closed or tape it in, and check the cube solenoid operation.

:) :) :)

Solinoid works so I have to believe it is in the Ice cube handle switch on the freezer door unit. Water handle works. I am unable to remove the handle assembly unit.

Ikost,
Here is some basic information for accessing the dispenser components :

[FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]
1. Unplug the refrigerator power cord. 2. Remove the overflow grille from the housing. 3. Unsnap front cover at the bottom of the housing. (you'll need a large flat blade screwdriver, insert the blade into the slots molded in the bottom edge of the facade, ans pry out or twist the screwdriver, until the facade pops out). [FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]4. Disconnect the front cover switch harness connector and set the cover aside. [FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]5. Disconnect the power wire harness connector (BL/BK and W wires) 6. Disconnect the flapper door heater wire harness connector (if one is present). 7. Release the dispenser microswitch retainers and slide the switches off of their locator pins. Carefully handle the switches so they do not come apart.
8. Disconnect the wires from the terminals of the lamp holder. [FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]
9. Remove the two 1/4. hex head screws from the control bracket and remove the control bracket. 10. Remove the 1/4. hex head screw to remove the water fitting (fill spout) from the water dispenser lever.
11. Unsnap the ice guide and remove it from the ice dispenser lever.

[FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]
12. Remove the air pot by sliding the rear of the air pot out of the slot molded to the dispenser housing and slip the linkage out of the flapper door mechanism assembly. 13. Unsnap the flapper door and remove it from
the ice dispenser lever. While you remove the flapper door, carefully guide the flapper door heater wire and connector over the door mechanism assembly. 14. Remove the 1/4. hex head screw securing the dispenser levers pivot retainer to the dispenser housing and remove the retainer.

[FONT=Arial045.813][FONT=Arial045.813]
15. Remove the water dispenser lever. 16. Remove the ice dispenser lever by maneuvering it around the door mechanism assembly. 17. Pull the pin from the door mechanism assembly and remove the spring and mechanism
assembly. 18. Reassemble in reverse order."

Drop us a line when you're done, and let us know how things went.

Assume the probable cause of failure is the micro switch, correct?

Yes, we're hoping it's a failed micro switch, but you also need to check the dispenser lever, to make sure the lever arm is making contact with the switch, and the lever itself has not broken loose from the tabs molded into the dispenser housing.
You'll do fine.

There are no slots in the 'facade". I tried using a puuty knife to no avail. This is decor type door so it has wood inserts which slide into the door rails. Is it possible that I need to remove the door rails to access some screws underneath the wood?:cool:
