My problem was fixed by replacing the entire motor. The motor shaft had broken, more like disintegrated. Replaced the whole unit ($200), basically the entire shell that drops down into the middle of the dishwasher and everything is working again. Wow was it tough to get it back in. without taking out the dishwasher!
