also the one that controls the light.
Not sure what you mean by this, as far as I know there is not a thermostat that controls the light.

It seems like it is a temperature control problem. I took it apart, drum and all, and don't see anything suspect.

I am assuming that you cleaned the motor and also cleaned/checked the blower wheel.
Can you restart it right away or do you have to wait several minutes before it will restart?
Do you have to do anything else to get it to start re: open/close the door etc.?

If you have to wait it is usually the motor that is overheating and tripping it's internal thermal protect.
Try rotating the drum in the correct direction by hand, should rotate fairly easily. You may want to try this on a couple other driers, just to get a feel for it.
Could be the drum is overloading the motor.

Often it is just the motor is getting close to the end of it's lifetime.
